Tutorial #3 - Create Web 2.0 Styled Text

This is the third in a series of tutorials by Cozalli.co.uk, feel free to post your results :)

1. Create a new document I’m using 500×450, don’t leave the background white as some of the effects in this tutorial won’t show up, I’m using a gradient background, (#4b4b4b to #2c2c2c).

2. Now you’ll need to find a font you like and want to use, to do this search through preset fonts or find a font that you’d like from a font website look here for some links to good font websites.

3. For this tutorial I’m using a font called ‘Rezland’ created by Fraser Davidson.

4. Create a new text layer and type anything you want, I’ve changed the font colour to a medium blue (#007fe1).

5. Right click the text layer and go to ‘Blending Options’, apply the following settings.

Stroke

Drop Shadow

6. After you’ve applied these effects using the magic wand tool (W) select each letter in the text layer, using the ‘add to selection’ function of the magic wand tool, to select each letter just click for example the blue part of the letter, not the stroke.

7. With the letters still selected, create a new layer (ctrl+shift+N) and name it shine.

8. Fill the new layer (shine) with white, should look like the picture, after you’ve filled the layer you can now deselect the selection we made earlier (ctrl+D)

9. Lower the opacity of the new layer (shine) to around 20%.

10. Make an Elliptical selection of the new layer like so, and delete your selection.

11. You can repeat these steps to make more shines onto the text at different opacity. Also instead of using a white fill for the shine, a white to transparent gradient is often used.

12. Merge the shine and text layer together by hiding the other layers (clicking the eye icon on the layer) and merging the visible layers (Shift+Ctrl+E).

13. After merging the layer, duplicate it, you can do this by right clicking the layer and selecting duplicate layer.

14. With the new layer selected, go to Edit >> Transform >> Flip Vertical.

15. Position the layer underneath the original layer as a reflection, you can do this by using the ‘move tool’ (V), also after you’ve done this you will notice the drop shadow from the two layers doesn’t look too good, to fix this move the Shine Copy layer below  the original in the layers list.

And there you have it  good looking web 2.0 styled text, you can always play with the settings and colours to get your desired look.
